I am grateful to the artist friend JYK, who helped me set up this site, for homing in directly on this piece, which with hindsight is perhaps the most sophisticated item (for my age, fourteen or fifteen), that I ever made in the Charterhouse pottery Studio.

Today I am astonished by the reverberations this spontaneous and intuitive exercice in making something according to a given technique would have in my later work and design teaching.
If the cut out slab is seen as the figure, then that around the voided space is the ground. As an exercise in stereotomy (the cutting of volumes) I asked first year Lugano students (AI DACD SUPSI) to extract solid volumes from a material and use them to build upon the remaining ‘ground’.
I’m therefore also grateful to my SUPSI colleague Lorenza MAZZOLA who commented during a student portfolio review that this particular compito was una gran bella idea. Who ever might imagine it originated at the fingertips of an adolescent’s exploration into the potential of clay slab-ware ?
Credit is due to our Studio master, Michael (‘Potty’) WOODS, who encouraged us to explore any and all techniques. My debt to him knows no bounds.
