Keimena, Athens, 1987

The late Greek surrealist poet (1920-2010) had given my wife, a former translation colleague and close friend of his, an appointment at legendary typographer and publishing house Keimena, in Athens. For them to chat quietly we gravitated to the dark roof-space garret. Not understanding a word, I was nevertheless stuck by our host’s extraordinarily expressive features and gestures.
Drawn in ink on squared paper, I later gave the original to Georgia Papageorgiou, surviving business partner of the late and legendary Filippos Vlachos.
