Collaborative schemes, as private practitioner, have essentially been for architectural competitions. The occasional commission and some pro bono work may be included.
Ideas competition, Teano, 1997
This Italian competition sought ideas for structuring the somewhat degraded and neglected area outside Teano used for the sagre, those religious festivals, still very popular in Italy, which attract thousands of participants. Analogous to Goethe’s Weimar improvements, our layout defined a perimeter, treated as parkland, with avenues, enclosures, kiosks….

Team Disney, Marne-La-Vallée, 1991
As France-registered associate architect of Aldo ROSSI (Milan) & Morris ADJMI (New York) I had hoped that this project would provide a genuine opportunity to develop my practice. Alas, no.

Acropolis Museum, Athens, 1990
Having handed in my resignation from the employment of François BELLET, in order to set up in private practice, I proposed to David NAESSENS to develop a scheme together for this. His wife Louise COTTER would also participate as we met in the autumn in Athens at the occasion of my koumbaro‘s own wedding. Of the three sites proposed we opted for Koile, the most improbable, but in our eyes the most interesting, inasmuch as a trek across the landscape up to the Acropolis would induce the proper sense of anticipation that former beholders of the ‘address’ to the sea would have witnessed.

Donnington Holt Bath Houses, 1985
This commission, a feasibility study regarding the siting and design of an indoor swimming pool for a friend and former business colleague of my family was awarded the 1987 Architectural Association of Ireland award, by virtue of my colleague David NAESSEN’s nationality.
Unfortunately the client did not proceed, but sold the site, which had a tree-framed view of Donnington Castle, as if the genuinely historic ruin was a private folly in the landscape.

Mercato di Rialto, Venice Biennale, 1984
A bursary, the Chase-Taliani Venice Scholarship, which I was offered at the RCA, allowed me to undertake a 4 month long stay in Italy, mostly in Venice, during which time I collaborated with Mimmo LERRO, then in the process of registering withe Ordine degli Architetti, Campania.
