Spending at last part of every childhood summer on the West coast of Scotland we were always very familiar with boats and particularly drawn to the spectacle of spinnakers, jibs, mainsails and booms, often jostling with each other in a race or superimposed upon the sea-loch horizons.
With hindsight I also clearly see the influences of an aesthetic converging in architecture and engineering which had already gripped me. For example, the tenuous members of Riccardo MORANDI’s ill-fated Genova autostrada bridge which I photographed — absolutely fascinated, and as best I could from a moving car — that very same year, late July, 1973.
